Our Story

Old roots.

First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Colorado Springs was the first church in the city, formed in 1871, the same year our city was founded.

Since then, FUMC has had a faithful history of planting United Methodist churches in the community. FUMC started Mountain View United Methodist (Woodland Park) in 1978, Sunrise United Methodist (Briargate area) in 1980, and the former Wilson UMC, now Wilson Community Church (Mountain Shadows area) in 1987.

A new blooming on the Prairie.

With great joy, in 2019, First United Methodist Church planted Prairie Campus on the eastern plains of Colorado Springs. In 2026, Prairie is becoming Prairie United Methodist Church — an independent United Methodist congregation rooted in the same spirit, the same welcome, and the same mission that have shaped us from the beginning.

We remain deeply grateful for First United Methodist Church and for the history that brought us here. To learn more about this next chapter, visit our Chartering 2026 page.

Flourishing out East.

Since the Prairie Campus launched in 2019, it’s been an unforgettable journey full of grace, laughter, taking risks, and making things up as we go along. We love our monthly potlucks, small groups, and any excuse to get together. Most of all we love being a church that serves as each month we engage in the work of Christ. What a crazy, joyful ride building a new church. Come be a part!
